How to discover the writing routine that fits your lifestyle and maximises productivity
Every author dreams of having a steady writing routine that fuels creativity and productivity. However, finding the right schedule is often a daunting task. Writing is usually a side hustle for most of us - juggling a day job, parenting responsibilities, etc.
The first step is identifying a routine that fits into your life seamlessly. A good writing routine is the foundation for building momentum, finishing projects, and avoiding burnout.
In this post, we'll explore how to craft a writing routine that’s as unique as you are, why flexibility matters, and how to maintain that routine long-term.
1. Assess Your Current Lifestyle
The first step to establishing a productive writing routine is understanding your daily habits. Are you an early riser or do you work best after dark? Personally, I’m best earlier in the day. You might not be.
And, do you find that you’re most focused in short bursts, or do you need hours of uninterrupted time to truly get into the groove? Again, I can write for an hour or two in one sitting, any more than that and my brain hurts! However, take stock of when you feel your most alert, and more importantly, when you have the mental space to write.
So, try writing in different time slots to work out when is best for you. Once you identify your peak time, if you can, make it a non-negotiable part of your day. But even squeezing in 15-30 minutes a day can accumulate into significant progress over time.
