12. The Power of Email Lists – Why Authors Need Email Lists and How to Start Building One from Scratch

Don’t rely on algorithms, own your audience with a powerful email list.
For many authors, email lists can seem like an unnecessary or even intimidating part of their marketing strategy. After all, social media is free, easy to use, and offers immediate access to thousands of potential readers. But here’s the truth: relying solely on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram can leave you at the mercy of ever-changing algorithms and rules.
Your email list, on the other hand, is something you own. It gives you direct access to your readers, without worrying about whether your posts are being seen. It’s a reliable, personal way to connect with your audience, share updates, and even make sales.
Funnily enough, this is a task I’d long neglected until I recently woke up and remembered the power of an effective email list and I’m putting a lot of time and effort into rebuilding mine.
In fact, I feel so strongly about email lists (and reader magnets) they’re part of a recent post where I bleat about how they’re one of the few, true needle movers for authors.
Why Authors Need an Email List
1. Control Over Your Audience
When you build an email list, you’re creating a direct line to your readers. Unlike social media, where posts can get lost in a sea of content, an email lands straight in someone’s inbox. It’s personal, direct, and, when done right, incredibly effective. Your subscribers have given you permission to contact them, which means they’re already interested in what you have to say.
2. Reliable Reach
Social media platforms change their algorithms all the time, which affects who sees your posts. An email list gives you consistent access to your readers, regardless of what’s happening with social media trends. If you’ve built a list of engaged subscribers, you’ll know exactly who you’re reaching every time you hit ‘send.’
3. Sell Books Directly
Email marketing can be one of the most effective tools for driving sales. You can alert your list to new releases, exclusive offers, or special deals. You can also give your readers behind-the-scenes content, helping to create a stronger bond that can turn casual readers into loyal fans.
